About the artist

Mikael Konttinen was born in Stockholm/Sweden in 1974 by Finnish parents. From early teens he started playing on with electronic music. He studied musicology at the Stockholm University, intermingled with courses in philosophy and logic. He also studied electro acoustic composition for a period of four years at the renowned Elektron-Musik Studion (EMS) in Stockholm under internationally acclaimed Swedish sound artists such as Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Erik Mikael Karlsson, Mats Lindstrom, Paulina Sundin amongst others. He has been active on the Stockholm scene for electro acoustic composition and is member of the intermedia art organization Fylkingen in Stockholm. MK has arranged and performed on several concerts and events in Fylkingen and other venues in Stockholm such as Kulturhuset and Moderna Museet. He was also one of the co-founders of the now annual outdoor electronic music festival in Ralambshovsparken/Stockholm. One of his sonic pieces can be found on the CD “Eight Times Falling” released on Elektron Records (EM 1004).

After working mainly with sonic art and supporting himself several years as a computer technician and system/database administrator with some graphic design jobs on the side, he realized that this was this was not “it”, so he quit his job and moved on to try out visual art. He started by doing a year of arts and crafts at preliminary art school in Sweden and a year of graphic design before entering the bachelor level at Kunsthogskolan i Bergen (KHIB) / Bergen Academy of Fine Art in Norway. There he found the time to get deeper into considerations about the contemporary art scene and explorations of the digital process, now focusing on generative techniques with conceptual base.

During the time at the academy he has been one of the five members in the eighteen months long pan-European student project Maps Without Roads who performed a three day project at the ELIA biennial conference in Lucerne/Switzerland in 2004. He is also member of the multinational artist group Pollen who are having their first official work on displayed in Nottingham/England in April 2006. Otherwise he has presented works in Norway and internationally (notably screenings of pieces at “Drive In Kino” by Asa Lovgren and Karolin Tampere in Sorfinset/Norway, part of the Rakett showcase at ETKA Gallery in Tallin, and as participant of the Balcan-Scandinavian workshop “Speak Up!” arranged by Mika Hannula with exhibition on location in Zagreb/Croatia). He has also a video piece on the contemporary art DVD “Norwydeo.1”.

As of writing (december 2005) he is in his final year of the bachelor degree and has spent the autumn semester on student exchange to the Korean National University of Art (KNUA) in Seoul where he is having the site specific solo show “Seoul Limbo” 19-22:nd December 2005.
